On your own

January 17, 2021

Several years ago I was called to a hospital for a victim of a kidnapping. While speaking with the victim I learned that she had been dating a guy and he had turned violent. I was informed that the boyfriend had come over and threatened her with suicide if she broke up with him. The victim tried to leave but was forcibly stopped by the suspect. The victim was held captive and assaulted in her own home for multiple days and nights. The level of fear the victim had was immense. She was certain he was going to kill her if she couldn't escape. At one point the victim had tried to crawl out a bathroom window but the suspect stopped her and threw her, causing her to strike her head. The victim had no way to contact 911 as the suspect had already broken her phone. She had been physically assaulted multiple times and had her life threatened with an edged weapon. The suspect was much larger and physically stronger than her. The victim was able to convince the suspect that their relationship was fine and he needed to go to work. The victim dropped the suspect off at work, went straight to the hospital and called 911.

This was an extremely terrifying event for the victim. Imagine being held captive in your own home and being physically unable to stop the ongoing assaults against you, knowing that at any point your captive was going to kill you. You should always have a plan, the skills, and the tools to fight for your life.

Yes, the suspect was located. He was tracked to a nearby city where he had known associates. He fled on foot when he saw law enforcement. I located him hiding behind a piece of sheetrock, underneath a work bench. He did serve a short sentence and is now out. He has committed other crimes since being released.
